Chiropractic Care for Hip Pain
Do you suffer from hip related pain? Why put up with hip pain when your local chiropractor may be able to identify the reason why and offer treatment to alleviate your hip pain. Chiropractic care specialises in holistic therapy by applying non invasive adjustments.
Sometimes we are all guilty of self diagnosing, and this is a common mistake. Always get your information from a qualified professional – in this case your local chiropractor may be just the right person to make that first appointment with to find a solution or learn how to work with your local chiropractor to manage your hip pain.
How can you be sure to attain the services of a great chiropractor? Your local chiropractor should be a good listener, take their own x-rays, and consult with you about the findings before any postural adjustments are made. Only then can a treatment plan be activated.
Common Diagnosis of Hip Pain
The following are the most common causes of pain through the Hip and Leg Area.
Hip Bursitis
This painful hip condition occurs when a bursa’s synovial membrane becomes irritated and inflamed. This can cause the now inflamed membrane to produce excess synovial fluid, causing the bursa to swell.
Your Hip bursae are located underneath skin, fat, muscle, and soft tissue, so even moderate to severe swelling may not be visible. This can be temporary or prolonged.
Sufferers find it difficult to walk, climb stairs, bear weight and can have pain after prolonged seating or after sleep. The pain can be felt in the groin and radiate into the buttocks and down the leg.
Sacroiliac Joint
If pain is felt in the lower back and buttocks it could be from the Sacroiliac joint. The Sacroiliac joint is positioned between the spine and hip. It is so important to get this diagnosed as the pain can be a cause of other conditions, such as a hip problem or even a herniated disc.
Osteoarthritis
When the cartilage that surrounds the joints wears down, often age related, tenderness, stiffness and pain in the joints and difficulty in walking are common signs of this condition.
Hips out of Alignment
The hips can rotate forward or back or drop to one side. When this happens and the hips are no longer in the centered position, the spine and legs must compensate for this. In some cases, people have reported that they actually feel crooked.
Regular chiropractic adjustments are key here and you will feel so much better when you are bought back into alignment.
Hip Pain – getting a diagnosis
Diagnosing hip pain can be quite a process. Your local chiropractor will inquire about your general lifestyle, risk factors, your overall general health.
Also what pain you are experiencing (including the severity, frequency and duration), how it is impacting you and how the right chiropractic care plan can have you well on the way to living a fuller productive life, free of pain.
To determine the correct diagnosis, a consultation may involve taking scans, x-rays and blood tests.
Self-Care for Hip Pain
To get the most out of your chiropractic adjustments, it is recommended that under the guidance of your chiropractor, you take steps of your own to compliment treatment in between visits. This could include specific exercises for you to do at home.
To get the most benefits from your treatment consider lifestyle factors that need to be addressed.
- Is your weight in the healthy weight range? Extra weight adds a lot of pressure on your joints.
- Are you moving around enough through exercise? If exercise is difficult for you, consider doing 3 lots of 10 minutes of cardiovascular activity daily. This will be a good start to build up your fitness.
- Consider exercising in a pool, less weight bearing on joints.
- Eating a balanced diet, be sure to eat more unprocessed food, rich in vitamins, minerals and calcium.
- Taking a natural anti inflammatory daily, ones that contain Curcumin, Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc are best. Always check with your health professional first.
Summary
In most cases hip pain develops over a period of time. What starts out as a niggle, but then becomes a pain that is affecting your everyday life.
Therefore if pain has been building up over a period of time, it makes sense that chiropractic treatment will also take more than one visit before you see noticeable results. Perseverance is key.

Common Causes of Hip Pain
Here are some of the common causes of Hip Pain which our Chiropractors can help you with.
Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
This generally refers to pain in the sacroiliac joint region. Common symptoms include lower back pain, sciatic leg pain, buttock, groin or hip pain. Also urinary frequency and prickling and tingling can occur. Pain can be a dull aching or sharp and stabbing pain. Symptoms also worsen with prolonged or sustained positions eg, standing, lying, sitting, bending forward, climbing stairs, climbing a hill and standing up from a seated position can also provoke pain.
Meralgia Paraesthetica
This is numbness or pain in the outer thigh caused by a nerve that extends from the spinal column to the thigh. Symptoms are pain on the outer side of the thigh sometimes continuing to the knee, burning sensation and tingling or numbness in this area. Also bee sting like pains and occasional aching in the groin area spread across to the buttocks. Usually more sensitive to light touch then firm pressure and sensitive to heat.
Pinched Nerve
Radiculopathy also referred to as pinched nerve most often is caused by compression of a nerve root shortly after it exits from the spinal cord. Pain or weakness depends on which nerve has been “pinched” eg impingement in the neck can cause pain & numbing in the arm or impingement in the lower back can cause similar problems through the leg into the foot.
Sciatica
Sciatic nerve compression from the lower back causes pain going down the leg from the lower back. About 90% of Sciatica is due to a spinal disc herniation pressing on the nerve root. The pain is often a shooting pain and usually on one side but can be both. Lower back pain is sometimes present and weakness or numbness may occur in various parts of the leg or foot.
