Bulging Disc Symptoms

A bulging disc can be painful, let us gently rectify that for you.

Have You Got a Bulging Disc?

A Bulging Disc is usually caused by injury or degeneration to your spines intervertebral disc. It most commonly occurs in the lower back (lumbar spine) or your neck (cervical spine) but can also occur in your upper and mid back (thoracic spine).

A Bulging Disc is often referred to as a slipped disc, protruding disc or herniated disc. However there are differences as we explain.

The Symptoms of a Bulging Disc

You have 33 vertebral bones in your spinal column. These are separated by cartilaginous discs, which are mini shock-absorbers. A healthy disc will have an outer tough layer surrounding a more jelly-like inner part.

The bulging disc can be caused by trauma but is usually a degenerative disc condition. As we age so the intravertebral disc ages with us. It tends to dry out and flatten.

The elasticity goes and as it flattens it spreads out, sometimes overlapping the spinal vertebrae. The overlap is often uneven, and sometimes parts will irritate your nerves causing an inflammation. Also, the disc can press on your nerves.

However, this is not an uncommon finding in MRI scans procured for other conditions – and very often the patient is not aware that they have a bulging disc as its not irritating or pressing on the nerves.

But it is possible.  If the patient has nerve pain from a bulging disc, it can be very sudden and sharp with a surging affect that radiates after the initial feeling of pain.

If you suspect your back pain resembles bulging disc symptoms it is recommended you seek advice from your Health Professional and enlist your Chiropractor for bulging disc treatment.

This is a diagram showing the difference between a bulging disc, a herniated disc, a thinning disc, degenerative disc and a normal disc. The image shows the difference between a normal disc to one that is degenerating, a bulging and herniated disc to a disc that is thinning with age or disease.

Although ageing results in wear and tear, there are many lifestyle choices, that if adopted can prevent acceleration of pre-existing spine conditions.

  • Lifting with the muscles of the legs – ie bending the knees – and keeping the weight close to your torso
  • Using gym equipment properly – taking the time to warm up and cool down
  • Maintaining a healthy weight because extra weight puts a strain on your back
  • Moderate and enjoyable exercise
  • Not smoking
  • Keeping your spine in shape with regular chiropractic care.

Herniated Disc Symptoms

A spinal disc herniation is different to a Bulging Disk. The tough outer disc coating has been breached and the disc protrudes further out and is highly likely to cause symptoms.

It’s also more likely to follow from some form of trauma – heavy lifting especially with a twisting motion, certain sports and heavy manual labour.

You can suffer from a spinal disc herniation in any part of your spine although the lower back or a lumbar disc herniation is more common.

Typically, you will feel pain in your back and down the back of your leg – often extending as far as the calf. This pain can be quite severe making walking difficult, especially after you have been sitting or standing for a while.

Any sudden movement such as coughing and sneezing can cause a surge of pain. If you experience any numbness or any difficulty with passing urine– see your Health Professional without delay.

Coughing and sneezing can send a jet of pain through you. If you experience any numbness or any difficulty with passing water – see your Health Professional without delay.

A cervical herniated disc (neck area) occurs when one of the discs between one of your 6 cervical vertebrae herniates. Occasionally there are mild symptoms, sometimes it follows trauma, and the pain and tingling radiate from the neck to the arm or hand, depending upon which disc is affected.

Normally the pain is felt just in one arm or leg but not always. It can last a few days or a few months. Often, the pain comes and goes and may be associated with numbness, weakness and tingling sensations.

You might find certain movements or activities make it flare-up. A cervical herniated disc can result from a whiplash injury, although there are usually other problems as well.

If you think you may be experiencing herniated disc symptoms your trusted Chiropractor will advise on an appropriate herniated disc neck treatment.

Why Do we Call it a Slipped Disc?

Although often referred to as a slipped disc by patients, in medical terms it is accepted as another name given to a bulging disc or herniated disc. It is when a disc between your vertebrae bulges, herniates or degenerates or it may be a combination of all of these factors.

Common Causes of Bulging Disc or Herniated Disc.

Here are some of the common causes of Bulging Disc or Herniated Disc which our Chiropractors can help you with.

Spinal Disc Herniation

This is usually caused by an injury to the cushioning and connective tissue between vertabrae, usually caused by excessive strain or trauma to the spine. Usually notable by neck pain or lower back pain but any part of the spine can be affected as per the next lumbar & cervical examples.

Lumbar Herniation

Lumbar Disc Herniation occur in the lower back. Symptoms can be felt in the lower back, thigh, buttocks, anal and genital regions and may radiate to the foot or toe. The sciatic nerve is the most commonly affected nerve.

Cervical Herniation

Cervical Disc Herniation occurs in the neck. Symptoms may be felt in the neck, back of the skull, shoulder, scapula, arm and hand.

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)

Disc degeneration occurs both in DDD and aging and is one of the most common causes of back pain. Basically the disc between the vertabrae are affected.

Slipped Disc

A spinal disc herniation is often referred to as a slipped disk. This term is not considered accurate as the spinal discs are firmly attached between vertabrae and cannot slip out of place.

Inflammation

It is increasingly recognised that back pain resulting from disc herniation is not only due to compression of the spinal cord but also may be caused by chemical inflammation released by a herniated disc or disc tear.
