Relief from Migraine on the Gold Coast
Searching for Migraine Treatment – Gold Coast?
If you suffer from migraine, then you know how disabling it can be. It has been estimated that 4.9 million Australians are subject to migraine symptoms attacks – yet the condition is often misdiagnosed and inadequately treated.
According to the “Deloitte Access Economics Report, 2018”, 71% of migraine sufferers are women, mostly of working age – and 7.6% have over 15 migraine days a month.
Imagine, half your days with a headache!
Nationally, migraine imposes a huge cost to Australia, in economic and healthcare cost of just over $55 billion – as well as the wellbeing costs to the sufferer.
And in addition, there are about seven million people with tension headaches – and for these people there is also a reduction in working and social activities. Together, migraine and tension headaches are the most common types of headache, both can be disabling
And perhaps most excruciating of all are the cluster headaches – fortunately not so common.
However, once the diagnosis has been made there are treatments available, and recent researches into the role of the chiropractor treating Migraine symptoms have been optimistic.
What are Migraine Symptoms Like?
A migraine headache varies from person to person, but a typical attack may start with a visual disturbance – often described as a fluffy cloudiness of vision.
More uncommon is an ocular migraine that can come on suddenly with flashing light, zig zag flashing light or aura in the field of vision.
There is often nausea – which may lead to vomiting – sometimes with some relief of the headache which by now is likely to be the dominant feature.
The headache usually affects one side of the head, usually the front and side, with a throbbing quality. The sufferer may be very sensitive to light and noise and seek a quiet place to rest in the dark.
It is interesting to note that more than half of migraine sufferers have their first migraine symptoms before the age of 12.
Migraine Treatment Gold Coast and your Chiropractor
Medicine
Best used as an accompaniment while migraine causes are being investigated and taken under advisement of your trusted health professional. While it may seem like a quick fix, and it will probably provide temporary relief in the short term it is always in your best interest to be seen by your local health provider, so they can pinpoint the migraine causes.
Chiropractor care
Your chiropractor has undergone extensive training. This goes beyond their skills in manipulation of the spine but extends to general well-being – which can have a profound effect on your health, and lessen the frequency and severity of migraine symptoms.
Chiropractic adjustments
If your spine is out of sync, then it’s hardly surprising that your spinal cord and nerves are affected – and if this misalignment continues then the pain is likely to continue.
A review of the scientific literature found that as many as 75% of migraine sufferers benefited from regular sessions with a Chiropractor. More research is needed but these results are encouraging. Regular spinal manipulation or adjustments will reduce migraine causes and provide relief from migraine symptoms.
Your chiropractor will not only investigate your spinal positioning but can also advise you on changes in your lifestyle which will improve your general well- being. These can include the correct ways to exercise, your diet, your sleep, all part of migraine treatment – Gold Coast.
Diet
Some items in your diet may be triggering an attack of migraine, typically it will be:
- Cheese
- Marmite
- Caffeine
- Chocolate
Sleep
Not only is having enough sleep important – but your positioning, mattress and pillows might need adjustment to keep your spine supported in the correct position. Your chiropractor can advise you on this – and it is important!
Stress
Both tension headaches and migraine symptoms can be caused by stress. And the headaches often come just as you need to face a challenge – or most often afterward when you would so like to be able to relax. Guided imagery, breathing exercises, massage and even meditation can all be addressed by your chiropractor. Can they?
Tension Headache
These are common, and the name is appropriate as many of these are stress-related. We carry stress in the muscles of our neck and shoulder. (Take a deep breath and as you exhale try lowering your shoulders for a few moments and you might notice a difference).
The headache is usually a dull ache which can extend to any part of your head, it may even feel like a tight band round your head. Generally, there is no aura as in migraine and nausea – if present is mild.
Although these tension headaches do not have the ferocious power of a migraine, they still affect your ability to work and to enjoy life – and they can be long-lasting and debilitating.
Learning how to cope with stress is crucial, but your chiropractor will also have the skills needed to adjust any misalignment in your neck – thus reducing the tension.
And the great thing is that by treating the primary physical cause of the tension, the effects at are longer lasting than over the counter medication and without their side effects.
Your chiropractor can also offer advice on posture, seating and work arrangements, eating, exercise and relaxation techniques.
Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches may be excruciating. Typically, it wakes you up in the night. You feel intense pain around or in one eye and one side of your head.
The pain has been described as burning, throbbing, piercing. Sometimes there are warning signs as in migraine – an aura or sickness. You might suffer from frequent attacks for a period of weeks or even months – and then they go away. Hence the name “Cluster headaches”. might not return for years.
The headache lasts 15 minutes to three hours, but you could have several attacks in the day. The attacks go as quickly as they come, leaving you relieved but exhausted.
The affected eye may redden, the tissue around it appear swollen or the eyelid drooping. You may sweat and have a runny nose – just on the affected side of your face. And you may look pale or flushed, restless, pacing or rocking.
More common in men and when there is a similar family history, they sometimes present at certain times of the year. Although frightening and severe these cluster headaches are rare and not dangerous – and there are effective treatments to reduce the number and severity of the attacks.
Medication may not be effective; oxygen and anaesthesia have been tried with limited success. But they are only dealing with the symptoms and not the underlying cause.
However, help is available, and your chiropractor can make gentle and very targeted adjustments. This work is still in the early stages, and there have not been any large-scale scientific studies but there are many testimonials as to its effectiveness.
