Chronic Back Pain - Gold Coast

By chronic back pain, we mean severe back pain that has lasted for more than three months and causes you ongoing pain in your daily life. It may come and go, and finding the underlying cause is crucial for successful treatment.

The most common cause is simply age–the wearing out of the structures which make up our spinal column–the bony vertebrae and the intervertebral discs which lie between them.

The most common causes of Back Pain on the Gold Coast are;

  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis of the spine.
  • Disc degeneration–thinning and loss of their rubbery, cushioning effect
  • Bulging disc or herniated disc
  • Spinal stenosis–the canal inside the vertebral bones wherein lies the spinal cord becomes narrow
  • Muscle pain and tenderness
  • It may also result from prior injury

There are other less common causes of chronic back pain and a visit to your trusted Gold Coast Chiropractor or Medical Professional will help to diagnose then treat the cause of your lower back pain. Often X-rays are used to determine the underlying problem.

Treatments are varied and no individual is alike. A plan tailored to encourage the body’s natural ability to heal and strengthen is why most people have found Chiropractic Care to be the best.

Chiropractors are well experienced in treating lower back pain as around a third of their patients have some degree of back pain which is related to their spine..

Bulging or Herniated Discs Causing Back Pain

This is a diagram showing the difference between a bulging disc, a herniated disc, a thinning disc, degenerative disc and a normal disc.Your spinal column is made up of a stack of 33 bones – your vertebrae. Between each of the bony vertebrae is a cushion of cartilage – these are the spinal discs that act as cushions to absorb the shocks from your activities like walking, jogging, twisting and lifting.

Each disc is made up of a soft inner gelatinous cartilage and an outer cover of tough, harder cartilage. As you age so the discs become a little dried out and stiffer. They become less able to absorb the rigours of our daily activities. The disc flattens and the margins sometimes protrude outside the bony vertebral area. This is commonly referred to as a bulging disc.

When one area of the hard, outer cartilage is damaged and part of the softer gelatinous inner part may be forced out when pressure is applied – this is known as a herniated disc – or a “slipped disc”. Because this may protrude further than the bulging disc it is more likely to cause you lower back pain extending down your leg.

When does it happen?

It can occur at any age, but lifestyle factors can play a part in it also.

Sudden twisting or lifting something incorrectly will put a heavy stress on your back. Sports injuries, furniture removing, digging the garden can all be implicated.

The prognosis?

The good news is a visit to your local chiropractor could be the first step in finding a permanent solution to your lower back pain treatment Gold Coast.

It may get better – or it may get worse. A herniated disc may lead to long-term complications if left untreated. These can include loss of sensation in the saddle area or loss of bowel or bladder control and the ability to walk without pain.

But Chiropractic treatment can be effective – and there is an affordable treatment plan for all ages and abilitites.

Chiropractors are very experienced in providing treatment for bulging or herniated discs and usually take an x-ray of the area before proceeding. MRI’s are sometimes but rarely used.

Sciatica or Nerve Pain

Back pain can be caused by the sciatic nerve causing sciatica shown in yellow. One of the most common reasons for lower back pain radiating down your leg is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. This nerve is the longest and largest in your body. It runs from the lower spinal cord from which it is formed, passing through your buttock, down the back of your leg, through to your calf and beyond to your toes.

With Sciatica you will feel the pain along the nerve pathway – buttock, back of your leg, calf – usually on one side only. Although sometimes the nerve pain will not be so intense as to limit your activities by much, it can be very difficult to escape no matter which way you sit or lie, it refuses to abate.  On rare occasions it can be incapacitating. The good news is that usually, sciatica goes away on its own after a few days or weeks. Your back specialist Gold Coast will advise you of the most suitable treatment to relieve your nerve pain.

There are many causes but here are three of the most common causes of sciatica:

  1. Herniated disc

One of the most common causes is a herniated disc. This can happen when a vertebral disc in your lower back protrudes and presses on the nerve roots of your sciatic nerve. The nerve responds by swelling and signalling pain – and the pain may not just be directly over the roots origins, but along the length of the nerve, hence the phrase “the pain radiates down the leg”

  1. Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

When your spinal canal, which encases the spinal cord, narrows, then the nerve is squeezed, causing you lower back pain and compresses the sciatic nerve area which can run down your leg.

  1. Piriformis Syndrome

As the sciatic nerve emerges from the vertebral column, it can be compressed by a small muscle near the hip which lies deep within your buttock. When this muscle contracts it presses on the adjacent sciatic nerve, causing inflammation, irritation – and lower back pain.

You should seek immediate help if:
  • If you suffer from weakness in your legs
  • Numbness or tingling in your thighs
  • Loss of control in your bladder or bowels

Gold Coasts Work Related Injuries

Back pain is the most common cause of work loss days in Australia. Around a quarter of sufferers between 18 and 44 years of age took over 10 days off per year, which has severe financial losses (around $4.8 billion loss per year).

Common causes are:

  • Heavy lifting–you should use the powerful muscles in your legs, tighten your core muscles and hold the item close to your body with elbows bent. It’s important not to twist at the same time as lifting – and never be afraid to ask for help–or use the lifts and hoists provided.
  • Repetition can dull your sense of safety and in itself, cause damage to your spine. Repetition often leads to fatigue, meaning you become weaker over the duration of the task, inviting injury to occur.
  • Posture is often neglected. Your computer should be at the right height for you, your chair supporting your correct posture, with the proper back support. Periodically get up, stretch and move around.
  • Rushing hurry and haste cause many an accident, a twist or sprain. Don’t let work pressure push you into doing what your body tells you is wrong.

How to Prevent It

Once you understand the risks of back pain and know the best way to avoid them, remember to take the necessary precautions. But we need to be reminded frequently, it is so easy to ignore the safety recommendations.

By working together with your employer, following the companies guidelines and recommendations will help to prevent work related injuries.  Any injury received at your workplace should be reported immediately to management.

Sports Related Injuries

When you take part in sport or exercise, there is always an associated risk of injury and back injuries are the most common. But around 90% of these will get better in time. Sometimes the injury may be more serious – and if in any doubt you should always consult a medical professional.

Certain sports may cause certain injuries, for example lower back pain typically follows a heavy lifting session in the gym. Also sports like diving, dancing, volleyball, where repetitive spinal movements may lead to back pain and injury.

How to reduce the risk of lower back pain in Sport

  • Engage the “right way” – use the proper equipment and techniques
  • Warm-up and stretch
  • And the general health advice like eat well, sleep well and remember that your body will often let you know if you are overdoing your sport – so listen to what it tells you!

But, of course, when you do engage in sport you will stay fitter and healthier.

Back Pain Red Flags

Red Flags – When you should see a Health Professional:
  • If your pain goes on for longer than two months
  • Your back pain is getting worse
  • If the lower back pain or tingling, numbness, extends to your legs
  • Any bowel or bladder dysfunction or change in habits
  • When the pain affects the way you sit, walk or stand.

Solutions for Back Pain

  • Use the correct lifting technique  at work and at home ie when lifting the kids.
